Working conditions

For those who have not worked on board ships the standards are high, criteria includes prior employment at hotels or at established fine dining restaurants for the food and beverage staff, hotel school training or maritime school training. Working on a cruise ship is often thought as a glamorous way of earning a living and explore the world. But don’t forget, you have to work seven days a week for months on end. For those prepared to work hard, there are great advantages. Salaries are better than similar shore based positions, tax-free, no bills, free food and accommodation. The added advantage of being able to experience new cultures is most attractive to many who like the aspect of travelling. But don’t forget to take the job very seriously.

Cruise lines strive to provide a very high standard of service, entertainment, safety, etc. Some people think cruise lines, like some resorts “gear up“ for the peak summer season and hire more employees. This is simply not true. Cruise ships are in season all year, many ships reposition to other parts of the world in order to chase the sunshine. Some ships have home ports and repeat the same 3, 5, 7 or 10 day cruise. Other ships change itineraries every two to three months and move to an other part of the world.

Cruise lines and concessions hire usually on 4 to 8 months contracts or longer. Sometimes for your first contract you have to pay for the plane ticket to the ship, but after successfully completing your contract, the company will pay for your plane tickets to and from the ship. Vacation time is usually between six weeks and three months.

The employer you will be working for, will confirm your employment in writing and if you are a non-US citizen, you will be able to obtain a visa from your country's American Embassy. A medical test will be arranged for you, so make sure you are in good health. Once on board the ship, you will be covered by the health insurance of the company.
