Life onboard

Crew members come from more than 70 different countries around the world. For many it is their first time away from home, to the United States, on a plane, or a ship. It is very important to the company’s success, and your own, for crew members to work as a team and respect cultural and individual differences.

Individual differences mean differences in life style’s and habits, such as being tidy or messy, a smoker of non smoker. Small living quarters magnify these differences. Keep your things neat and discuss times if/when smoking in the cabin is acceptable. A simple conversation can resolve misunderstandings.

Following the chain of command of the ship is absolutely necessary. Safety and security are at risk if instructions are not followed. Ask your supervisor if you have any questions about the chain of command.

Most crew cabins and areas located on decks below the guest areas. Crew areas and officer/staff cabins are maintained by cleaners. Depending on your position you are assigned to a cabin, generally no larger 125 square feet. Some ships have bathrooms in the cabin, other ships have communal bathrooms located by the cabin. The beds are usually bunk style and come with company provided sheets, pillows and bedspreads. All your meals will be served in the designated crew area and during designated ours in order to accommodate all crew. All meals are free of charge.

In passenger areas you will always wear your uniform complete with nametag. Be aware you are at that moment the represent if of the cruise line so be always polite to passengers and help them out where ever is possible. If you can't then send them to the Front Office for further assistance.

Most cruise ships provide for the crew one or more bars and relaxing areas, an internet cafe, a fitness area and an outdoor deck (sometimes with even a pool or whirlpool). Most of the times Officers and Staff Members are aloud to use the passenger facilities on certain conditions.
