Do I need a passport and visa?

Yes you do. You need a passport which is valid for at least 1 year after you arrived onboard your ship and a C1/D visa (crew visa) which you can obtain at the American Embassy in your home country. See for information and addresses the visa page.

 

How long are contracts for?

This depends on the cruise line/concession and your function but the average contracts are 4 to 8 months or longer onboard with 4 to 8 weeks holiday between. During your contract you work 7 days a week for about 8 to 12 hours a day.

 

Do I share a cabin?

Only officers and higher management positions do have a single cabin. Crew and staff will share a cabin with 1 to 3 other crewmembers. Cabins are small but functional and will contain bunk beds, a small writing desk and a television sometimes with a video or DVD player. Some cruise lines provide also a small refrigerator in each crew cabin. Most crew cabins have there own bathroom with a shower, a sink and a toilet but some cruise lines have shared bathrooms for 2 to 4 crew cabins.

 

How do I get paid?

Normally you will get paid cash in US dollars at the end of each cruise. Onboard or in port you can send money home using a money transfer. Normally you can rent onboard at the Crew Office a save deposit box for free or a small fee.

 

Do I need a medical exam?

Yes you do, before you can join your assigned ship you need a medical examination including a drugs, tbc and blood test. On the medical examination page you will find all information.

 

Can I work with my partner on the same ship?

Most cruise lines/concessions do normally what they can to place you and your partner on the same ship during the same period but they can not guarantee it.

 

Which crew facilities are provided onboard?

Most cruise ships have separate mess rooms for the crew and staff/officers where you will use your meals. Also onboard normally one or more crew bars and relaxing areas with games and a wide screen television with DVD player, a fitness center, a crew deck for sunbathing (sometimes even with a little pool or whirlpool) and an internet cafe. At the Crew Office you can normally rent books, videos and DVD's. Staff members and officers are normally allowed to use some passenger facilities such as bars and the buffet restaurant on curtain basis.

 

Can I go ashore when the ship is in port?

Yes when you don't have to work and the crew is allowed to go ashore you can. Always take with you your crew-id and in US ports your I-95 form. Be sure to be back onboard on time, normally one hour before the ship sails to the next port.

 

Can I e-mail and phone from the ship?

Most ships offer a crew internet cafe where you can send/receive e-mails and surf the web. Normally for a small fee of around $ 0.10 a minute. Making phone calls from the ship by using the satellite is normally expensive. In most posts you will find cheap calling center's.

 

Do I have to were an uniform?

Yes you do, the cruise line will provide you an uniform and nametag and you are responsible for cleaning it (for free in the ships laundry) and repairing/replacing it when necessary. In passenger areas you will always were your uniform including a nametag with your name and function.

 

What if I get sick onboard?

All cruise ships have a medical center onboard with a qualified doctor and nurses. During your contract your medical costs are covered by the cruise line. Some cruise ships have even a dentist onboard.

 

What about my laundry?

There will be a crew laundry area with washing machines and dryers at no charge. You can also use the ships laundry service for a small fee.
